A First-Timer's Guide to Outdoor Wellbeing Sessions

Explore this guide to learn more about A First-Timer's Guide to Outdoor Wellbeing Sessions.

Taking the first step into a new experience can be daunting — especially when you're navigating mental health challenges. At Reel Wellbeing, we understand that joining an outdoor session for the first time may come with uncertainty. That's why we've created this guide: to help you feel informed, reassured, and fully welcome before you ever arrive.

Our outdoor wellbeing sessions are designed to be as inclusive and pressure-free as possible. Whether you’re attending through a referral, heard about us from a friend, or found us while looking for something calm and community-based, you don’t need any prior knowledge or special equipment. You don’t even need to be sure you want to take part. Showing up is enough.

When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by one of our team members. We’re a small, friendly group of people who believe in the healing power of nature and human connection. There are no uniforms, no sign-in desks, and no forms to fill out unless you want to share something. You’re welcome to just let us know your name and settle in however feels comfortable for you.

Some participants choose to start with fishing. Others prefer to simply sit, take in the view, or chat with others. There is absolutely no obligation to engage in any activity. You can bring a book, listen to the birds, or just enjoy some quiet time. This is your space to use as you need.

We provide all the equipment for any activity you choose to try. If it’s fishing, you’ll be gently guided by someone who can show you the basics. If it’s walking or gardening, we’ll point you to a quiet corner or involve you in a small group. Everything is optional. We never push anyone to do more than they feel ready for.

We understand that many people who come to our sessions live with anxiety, low mood, or fatigue. That's why our approach is calm, unstructured, and supportive. You won’t be expected to talk about your mental health unless you choose to. There’s no group therapy circle, no pressure to share, and no obligation to explain yourself. Our sessions are about being, not doing.

You may notice the pace is slower than what you're used to. That’s intentional. Time outdoors moves differently. You might find that the simple act of watching the water, noticing the breeze, or hearing laughter from someone nearby begins to soften whatever tension you arrived with. You may leave feeling lighter. Or not. And that’s okay too.

What matters is that you came. That you stepped outside, allowed yourself to try something new, and shared space with others doing the same. That in itself is a powerful act of care.

You can attend as often or as little as you like. Some people come weekly. Others come when they need a reset. There are no attendance records, no right or wrong way to engage. Our team is here if you need to talk. We're also here if you don’t.

If you’re reading this and still unsure whether it’s for you, that’s perfectly okay. The first time is often the hardest. We encourage you to bring a friend, a support worker, or even just come for a short visit. Take things at your pace.

Reel Wellbeing is built on the belief that mental health support doesn’t always need to happen in clinics or with labels. Sometimes, it starts with something as simple as sitting by the water, with people who get it. We hope this guide has helped you feel a little more prepared, and we look forward to welcoming you when you’re ready.

You don’t need to know how to fish. You don’t need to have the right words. You just need to come as you are.
